McAfee has developed antivirus solutions for over three decades, and is one of the most recognizable names in personal computer security. Ownership of the brand has changed hands multiple times, but in April 2017 McAfee broke off into a standalone company owned by a few major investors. Today the company boasts that it protects "… more than 74.9 million endpoints daily, including 87% of the world's largest banks and Fortune 100 firms and more than 263 million consumer endpoints."

McAfee might have the experience and brand name, but does the company offer the same level of high protection that made it famous? This review takes a look at McAfee Total Protection.

McAfee offers solid but decidedly middle-of-the-road antivirus protection. A test of McAfee's performance in March 2018 showed that McAfee successfully blocked 99.1% of all known malicious software. The same test showed that it falsely identified a software threat in two instances. That makes more thorough than other popular software, such as Microsoft Antivirus, which only blocked 94.4% of software threats and had six false positives.

What about McAfee's impact on system performance. Too bloated software always risks the possibility of slowing down your computer, but McAfee excels here too. A test performed in October of 2017 shows that McAfee is in the top quintile when it comes to system impact. It will even slow your computer less than other big antivirus names, such as Kaspersky.

It's obvious that McAfee isn't interested in resting on their laurels. Their level of protection can still compete with the biggest names in antivirus today.

Beyond offering steely protection and minimal performance issues, McAfee also offers all the bells and whistles you could possibly hope for. In fact, simply calling McAfee Total Protection an "antivirus software" is a little bit like calling a smartphone a "pocket calculator." It doesn't quite capture all of the things you can do with it.

True to its name, McAfee Total Protection aims to provide well-rounded protection for the most serious security threats to your device. This leads to a somewhat complicated user interface, but McAfee tries to keep all the features neatly organized in five tabs: Home, PC Security, Identity, Privacy, and Account.

If you're just looking for an Antivirus scan, then head to the "Home" tab and choose either the "Quick Scan" and the "Full Scan." A quick scan is limited to threat activity in PC processes, critical Windows files, and other areas that tend to hide the most dangerous threats. It's designed to scrub your system when you don't feel a more comprehensive scan is necessary. On our test system the quick scan took about 10 minutes.

A full scan is more comprehensive: it checks all drives and folders for all known threats. That can include viruses, spyware, tracking cookies, rootkits, bots, Trojans, and worms. The length of a full scan is highly dependent on the speed of your system and the size of your hard drive, but expect to leave your computer alone for a while it works its magic.

McAfee also offers a swiss army of knife of security features beyond antivirus protection.

McAfee Firewall

McAfee Firewall manages permissions for programs that require internet access. You can import rules from Windows Firewall, close or open ports, configure networks, and get detailed reports about your firewall history. If you're a more advanced user, you can finely tune your settings for maximum security.

True Key Password Manager

If you're sick of remembering dozens of passwords across several websites, then True Key might be the solution you're looking for. You can sign in with a password, fingerprint, face, or even a second device. That makes it more robust than other password managers, which often are controlled with just a master password. If you already use a password manager, McAfee might be able to import your stored passwords.

Quick Clean Feature

McAfee QuickClean assists you with getting rid of junk files that are possibly taking up valuable hard drive space. It simply scans areas where junk files tend to pile up and deletes them for you. You might be surprised buy just how bloated those old temp folders have become.

Vulnerability Scanner

A Vulnerability Scanner lets you know when you need to update your software. It only checks for the most popular software, but it's great at installing patches or informing you when you should update your programs.

Parental Controls

Parental controls gives you a handful of ways to keep tabs on how your kids spend time online. For example, you can ensure there's age-appropriate website filtering, a custom filter list, and online scheduling that lets you determine how much time they spend online. It's useful for parents who want to feel confident when they let their kids spend time on their computer.

There's more: including a File Shredder and a Startup Manager. It's obvious that McAfee didn't want to just include them as junk extras. They were all surprisingly full featured and customizable. If you're looking for a simple, straightforward antivirus protection, then this might have too many features for your needs. But if you're look for a complete security suite that covers just about any threat you might face, then McAfee Total Protection has you covered.

Customer Support

If you ever run into problems, there is not shortage of ways to get help. You can call someone on the phone, ask other McAfee users in community forums, use livechat, or help yourself with the FAQs page.

When using livechat, you start by filling out your phone number, email, name and purpose of chat. The technicians in livechat are a little stiff, but ultimately knowledgeable. They had no problem answering a variety of questions about the product. The lively community forums are very active and filled with other users who like helping others. In short, McAfee might be the best supported antivirus product that you can buy today. If you don't exactly consider yourself a tech head and want to count help, that makes it a smart choice.
